Practical exercise 3: MESSIER OBESTS

Students are shown pictures of objects in the Messier's catalog. This can be done either by using a computer (and a multimedia projector), or by printing images of deep sky objects on color printers. They are asked to guess whether each object is a nebula, a star cluster or a galaxy.

It is good if first the teachers spend time on this task with the students and then to make sure that the students can recognize at least one galaxy - the Andromeda galaxy (M31), at least one nebula - the Orion nebula (M42) and at least one star cluster - the star cluster "Pleiades "(M45).
